DAY PROGRAM

Our program is designed to serve as a transition from a more restrictive placement, such as inpatient psychiatric hospitalization or a residential treatment program, for an individual who is progressing in emotionally functional behavior, or as a preventative intervention for an individual who is displaying a marked regression in emotional functioning. We strive to create a normalizing environment for the client. Activities are therapeutic in nature. Group interaction and socialization are stressed. Clinical intervention is on-site and available to meet the client’s immediate needs. At Woodward Children’s Center, the day program is for children, and has been designed within a school setting. The youngsters spend their day in classrooms with specially trained professional staff. There are only eight children in most classrooms. Activities are provided that include elementary and secondary education, academic instruction, pre-vocational training, independent living skills, social skills training and recreation. The activities and clinical treatment encompass a therapeutic milieu in which the emotionally disturbed child can overcome the limitations of disturbance and grow. A building-wide behavior modification program is utilized to manage problem behaviors. At Woodward Children’s Center , a full special education program functions daily with approval by the New York State Education Department. An elementary program, an academic diploma-bound high school and an IEP-based secondary program are provided. Woodward Children’s Center is a clinical program that exists to meet the needs of a population of special children. Children attend for twelve months a year. All of the youngsters in attendance have a primary diagnosis of emotional disturbance.
